Consumer Inflation Likely To Ease, But Stay Above 7% For Third Straight Month: Poll

Retail inflation in the country probably fell in November from October but remained above the Reserve Bank of India’s target, amid high food and petrol prices, a poll of economists by news agency Reuters showed. Retail inflation has stayed above the central bank’s comfort zone of 2-6 per cent for seven consecutive months, a streak not seen since August 2014. The December 4-9 poll of 48 economists forecast a drop in inflation in November to 7.10 per cent from 7.61 per cent in October, which was the highest since May 2014. If realised, November’s rate would be above 7.0 per cent for the third consecutive month. “Inflation for November is likely to be lower than October as there was some moderation in prices of vegetables in particular as well as pulses,” said Madan Sabnavis, chief economist at CARE Ratings. “On the upside, petrol prices had increased which worked in the other direction.” At its December 2-4 meeting, the RBI kept its key repo rate at 4.0 per cent and the Monetary Policy C

Amazon.com Inc on Thursday forecast a jump in holiday sales – and costs related to COVID-19 – as consumers continued to shop more online during the pandemic. A company executive added that heightened spending on delivery infrastructure would likely continue over years, and shares fell 2 per cent in after-hours trading. Since the start of the virus outbreak in the United States eight months ago, consumers have turned increasingly to Amazon for delivery of groceries, home goods and medical supplies. Brick-and-mortar shops closed their doors; Amazon by contrast moved to recruit over 400,000 workers and earned $6.3 billion in the just-ended quarter, its second consecutive record profit. Democratic politicians this month accused Amazon of holding “monopoly power” over merchants on its platform, which the company disputes. Meanwhile, more than 19,000 of Amazon’s U.S. employees contracted COVID-

Festival Shopping Could Lead To Recovery In India Gold Demand: World Gold Council

India’s gold demand in the fourth quarter is expected to recover after falling 30 per cent in the previous quarter as festivals are expected to strengthen retail jewellery purchases, the World Gold Council (WGC) said on Thursday. “We expect quarter four would be better than quarter three due to pent-up demand and festivals,” said Somasundaram PR, the managing director of WGC’s Indian operations. Demand for the precious metal usually spikes towards the end of the year in India, as buying gold for weddings and major festivals such as Diwali and Dussehra is considered auspicious. The country celebrated Dussehra earlier this month and jewellers reported improvement in footfalls and sales, said Somasundaram. But demand during fourth quarter would still be lower than the 194.3 tonnes recorded last year as consumers are struggling to adjust to near record high prices, he said. India’s gold demand in the first three quarters fell 49 per cent from a year earlier to 252.4 tonnes as coronavirus-t
