India's Services Sector Loses More Steam In December, Job Cuts Resume

Growth in India’s dominant services industry continued to lose momentum in December as a resurgence in coronavirus infections weighed on new business and employment, a private survey showed on Wednesday. Asia’s third-largest economy has been gradually recovering from a coronavirus-induced recession but is not expected to return to pre-pandemic levels soon, especially within the service industry — the engine of economic growth and jobs in the country. The Nikkei/IHS Markit Services Purchasing Managers’ Index fell to 52.3 in December from November’s 53.7 but held above the 50-mark separating growth from contraction for a third straight month. “A spike in Covid-19 cases was reported as a key factor restricting growth of new work intakes among service providers, which in turn curbed the rise in output and led to increased business uncertainty about the outlook,” Pollyanna De Lima, economics associate director at IHS Markit, said in a release. “It is clear that the early part of 2021 will c

Vietnam Purchased Indian Rice For First Time In Decades, Say Industry Officials

Vietnam, the world’s third biggest exporter of rice, has started buying the grain from rival India for the first time in decades after local prices jumped to their highest in nine years amid limited domestic supplies, four industry officials told Reuters. The purchases highlight tightening supplies in Asia, which could lift rice prices in 2021 and even force traditional buyers of rice from Thailand and Vietnam to switch to India – the world’s biggest exporter of the grain. Indian traders have been contracted to export 70,000 tonnes of 100 per cent broken rice for January and February shipments at around $310 per tonne on a free-on-board (FOB) basis, the industry officials say.”For the first time, we are exporting to Vietnam,” B.V Krishna Rao, president of the Rice Exporters Association, told Reuters on Monday. “Indian prices are very attractive. The huge price difference is making exports possible.” Dwindling supplies and continued Philippine buying have lifted Vietnamese rice export p

Addressing the media after chairing a high-level meeting, the minister said despite repeated appeals to wear masks and practise social distancing, people have not been taking precautions. Mr Rane predicted a spike in infections in January due to the recently held New Year celebrations and influx of tourists in the coastal state. “Tourists should realise that although they are here to enjoy, they must follow safety measures. I saw that 60 per cent of the people at the airport were not wearing masks,” the minister said. “We need to be cautious as a state. We want people of Goa to be safe. Business activities should continue, but people need to exercise caution. Goa is not a banana republic,” he said. The minister further said night clubs will have to ensure strict implementation of the standard operating procedure (SOP),

Maharashtra Government Waives Licence Fee To Provide Relief To Hospitality Sector

In a major relief to the hospitality industry, the government of Maharashtra has announced the waiving off the excise license fee on pro-rata basis along with the roll-back of the 15 per cent annual fee increase for the year 2020. The Hotel and Restaurant Association of Western India (HRAWI) and the Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI) have welcomed the Maharashtra Government’s decision. The government hopes this move will go a long way in restoring normalcy for the sector that has been hit badly due to the lockdown caused by the Covid19 pandemic.

Bhutan Denies Chinese Incursion. "Blatant Untruth," Say Global Observers

Bhutan today denied reports that China has constructed a village more than 2 kilometres inside Bhutanese territory near the contested Doklam plateau, despite clear satellite imagery and detailed map locations to the contrary. Maps bearing the official seal of the Bhutan government, also indicate that this new Chinese settlement lies well within Bhutan’s present claim lines. International observers, including Nathan Ruser, a satellite imagery analyst with the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, responded to Shen’s tweets by highlighting that the location of the Chinese village indicated a clear breach of Bhutan’s sovereignty. “Here’s a CGTN news producer openly admitting that China has occupied and now populated part of a sovereign country,” tweeted Mr Ruser. “This Pangda village has been constructed (as shown by the included map) 2.5 km beyond Bhutan’s international border. China now baselessly claims about 12 per cent of Bhutan,” Mr Ruser said. Responding to this morning’s denial b

The company re-fashioned operations for COVID-19 precautions, though more than 19,000 workers caught the virus, and some demanded site closures. Customers experienced slower-than-usual deliveries.
