There, she said, she was forced to drink a medicine that made her feel weak and nauseous, guards watching as she gulped. She and the others also had to strip naked once a week and cover their faces as guards hosed them and their cells down with disinfectant like firemen, she said. It was scalding, recounted the woman by phone from Xinjiang, declining to be named out of fear of retribution. My hands were ruined, my skin was peeling. The government in China's far northwest Xinjiang region is resorting to draconian measures to combat the coronavirus, including physically locking residents in homes, imposing quarantines of more than 40 days and arresting those who do not comply. Furthermore, in what experts call a breach of medical ethics, some residents are being coerced into swallowing traditional Chinese m

Overdue replacement cycle to drive recovery in commercial vehicles: VECV

Image
Overdue replacement cycle of commercial vehicles will drive recovery in the market, while demand for trucks is expected to start coming back from October-November onwards, according to a top official of VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV). Despite the challenging market situation currently, the company, a joint venture between the Volvo Group and Eicher Motors Ltd, expects that truck makers may find it difficult to supply when demand starts coming back, especially when large fleet operators opt for efficiency and productivity to drive down operating costs. “Even though the current market situation is very very tough, I am very optimistic because of a few reasons,” VECV Managing Director and CEO Vinod Aggarwal told PTI. In the commercial vehicle (CV) market, trucks are replaced by big fleet operators in five to six years, but the CV market dropped by 40 per cent in 2019-20, and “this year the first four months have been almost a wash out and the market has dropped by almost 85-90 per cent”,

China’s new tech export controls could give Beijing a say in TikTok sale

Image
China’s new rules around tech exports mean ByteDance’s sale of TikTok’s U.S. operations could need Beijing’s approval, a Chinese trade expert told state media, a requirement that would complicate the forced and politically charged divestment. ByteDance has been ordered by President Donald Trump to divest short video app TikTok – which is challenging the order – in the United States amid security concerns over the personal data it handles. Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) and Oracle Corp (ORCL.N) are among the suitors for the assets, which also includes TikTok’s Canada, New Zealand and Australia operations. However, China late on Friday revised a list of technologies that are banned or restricted for export for the first time in 12 years and Cui Fan, a professor of international trade at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, said the changes would apply to TikTok. “If ByteDance plans to export-related technologies, it should go through the licensing procedures,” Cui

HC expresses concern over steep increase in insurance policies premium for advocates

Image
The Delhi High Court has expressed concern over the sudden “steep” increase in the premium of insurance policies by government companies for lawyers and said this would completely defeat the purpose of the Chief Minister's Advocates' Welfare Scheme. The court perused a status report filed by the Delhi government, which showed that after the opening of the financial bids for the policies, the insurance companies have substantially increased the amount of premium and reneged on their earlier quotations given in November and December last year. The court, in an order passed on Friday, noted that the premium, which the insurance companies are now demanding, has been increased by two-and-a-half times for both the group insurance and mediclaim policies. “This court is of the opinion that this sudden increase in the premium within a matter of eight months is very steep. The Chief Minister's Advocates' Welfare Scheme would be completely defeated at this rate,” Justice Prathiba
