Should you buy an Air Purifier?

The answer to the question is a definite YES.

Most of us never thought of buying or using an Air Purifier. Little knowledge about this product makes us reluctant to buy it.

But keeping in mind the dust, smog, allergens and other harmful particles in the air, it is now becoming a necessity to have an air purifier at home as well as at office or our workplace.

When we decide to buy one for us research is very necessary about the brand, technical terms and options available. I have done an extensive research and shortlisted some of the air purifiers.

5 Tips To Buy An Air Purifier For Home

1. Faster rate of air purification in the room. Technically it is referred as CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate). This rating indicates how fast the air purifier can clean the air within a particular size room. For example, an air purifier with CADR rating of 300 cfm will clean a room of 300 sq ft much faster than an air purifier with CADR rating of only 200 cfm.

2. HEPA filter. HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Arrestor (Air Filter). They are the highest efficiency and best performing filters on the market. HEPA filters are required to filter a minimum of 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns in size to be considered a true HEPA filter. There are cheap foreign made filters that claim to be HEPA that are not so always be aware of these cheap imitations.

The primary use of HEPA filters is in hospital operation rooms, pharmaceutical labs, aerospace engineering facilities, and computer chip manufacturing but today many people are recognizing the huge advantages they give in their homes and businesses as well because they reduce any harmful air born particles that can damage the lungs.

3. Air Ionizer – It is a simple device which does not purify air. In Ionizer it shoots out or diffuses a negative ions. When these ions get charged with polluted air, these charged particles get settled at the surface when not touched it will remain on the surface but when these charged particles are disturbed it will come back to its original state. Some air purifiers make use of other technologies like negative ionization, ozone emission and UV filtration. However, these technologies work well for countries where the air quality is much better unlike India where you find very dense and high particulate pollutants i.e. the PM 2.5 which is extremely harmful for the living beings.

4. Level of noise – While buying an air purifier one must find out is the level of noise produced by the air purifier. As a rule of thumb, noise levels below 60 dB are considered safe for prolonged use.

5. Looks and build quality- Although this is not too important factor but aesthetics also matter. Almost all the manufacturers are now paying attention to looks and build quality.
