Oxford Vaccine Will "Protect 95 Per Cent", Says AstraZeneca CEO: Report

The Oxford coronavirus vaccine will “protect 95 per cent of patients” and is “as effective as the Pfizer and Moderna” alternatives, Pascal Soriot, chief executive of AstraZeneca, told British daily The Sunday Times , adding scientists had figured out a “winning formula to get efficacy up there with everybody else”. However, AstraZeneca, a British-Swedish pharma giant, has yet to release data confirming these claims. Interim results of Phase III trials released last month showed a 70 per cent efficacy rate as the average of two dosing regimens. One of these regimens – a half dose followed by a full dose – showed 90 per cent efficacy, while Pfizer’s data showed 95 per cent and Moderna’s 94.5 per cent. Mr Soriot also said the vaccine, which is likely to be cleared this week by the British health regulator, “should be” effective against an aggressive mutant strain of the virus first detected in London and southeast England in September. The Oxford vaccine, which will be mass-produced in In

Mental Health: The Impact Of Social Isolation And How You Can Cope With It

Social isolation has long been recognised as a cause of depression and other mental illnesses. There is increasing awareness of the impact of it on physical health as well. In my view the mind-body dualism is only of academic significance. Impact on health will include physical and mental health parameters as they are a unitary phenomenon. We also have to distinguish the differential impact of social isolation in the short term and in long term. Considering the impact on health of social isolation in the short term, we can think of the recent Covid scenario. As lockdowns were imposed across the world, in a short span of time, people were left in situations with varying degrees of isolation. We all need social contact to sustain ourselves emotionally, the degree of need is variable, depending on the personality style of the individual. Some of us are literally social animals and can only thrive in very active social interactions and some are content with minimal contact. Due to the arti

Severe Allergic Reaction In US Health Worker Minutes After Pfizer Shot

Britain’s medical regulator has said that anyone with a history of anaphylaxis, or severe allergic reactions to a medicine or food, should not get the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. But the US Food and Drug Administration has said that most Americans with allergies should be safe to receive the vaccine. It said only people who have previously had severe allergic reactions to vaccines or ingredients in this particular vaccine should avoid getting the shot. The Alaskan patient did not have a history of allergic reactions, Lindy Jones, the director of the emergency department in the capital Juneau where the patient was treated, told reporters at a virtual briefing. Called "Twinkle Bomb", Twinkle Khanna Shuts Down Trolls And How

Author Twinkle Khanna, in her latest social media post on Sunday, showed us how to shut down trolls like a boss. The author, in her latest weekly column, wrote about the boycott that her husband Akshay Kumar’s film Laxmii has been facing on social media and how some trolls have been sharing morphed pictures of her, in which they have turned her skin blue and put a large red bindi on her face to make it look similar to Akshay Kumar’s initial Laxmii posters. Sharing one of the morphed images, Twinkle wrote: “The trolls are so helpful just when I was looking for the supporting image, here it is. Crop rather than repost-you will see why in my column today. One tagged this picture with a comment, ‘Third class person. Nations Eyeing Gilead's Covid Drug Should Take Note Of Failed Trial: WHO

Health officials reviewing Gilead Science Inc’s remdesivir against COVID-19 should consider all evidence, including a trial in which the medicine failed, before giving it the green light, the top WHO scientist said on Friday. US regulators appeared not to have done so when approving the drug this week, Soumya Swaminathan told a news conference. The US Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved Gilead’s antiviral drug for treating patients hospitalized with COVID-19, making it the first and only drug approved for the disease in the United States. The FDA decision came a week after the release of the results of the World Health Organization’s Solidarity trial, which concluded remdesivir has little or no impact on a patient’s chances of surviving COVID-19. The FDA said its approval was based on three trials, including a 1,062-patient study by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, which found that remdesivir reduced hospital stays to 10 days from 15 days, and hel
